Here are a few cheap and easy upgrades that will will make a big difference in riding comfort:
- heated grips ($30 from )
- new rubber grips to replace your stockers that transfer vibes like crazy ($15)
- tankslapper tank protector ($20 from ) -especially important if you use a magnetic tank bag

Choice of exhaust is up to you. I like carbon because it dissipates heat really well, is light weight, and looks racy. Also to my ear it has a deeper and less tinny sound than aluminum or titanium. But that's purely subjective. Both my bikes have carbon Ducati Performance exhausts and the fit/finish is great, and exhaust notes are deep and bassy.

If you just replace your exhaust with slipon cans you won't need to tinker with your fuel injection settings (upgraded ECU, etc). You also won't experience any real power difference with just slipon exhausts, although the sound will be much improved. If you want real performance increases you'll need to open(remove) the restrictive airbox lid, install a free-flow air filter like a K&N or Pipercross, and then tweak your bike's fuel injection via a new Ducati Performance ECU or Powercommander. Much more expensive to fiddle with EFI settings but the results can be pretty dramatic.

Decisions like these will keep you up during those long winter nights.

Markus is right on the money re the performance upgrades. Slip-ons will shave about 10-15 lbs off it though, thats always a good thing.

The 800 SS is a great middle-weight bike. We've got one left that if I could I would buy for my girl. Shes on a CBRF3 now, so the 800 would be the perfect step to the world of Ducati for her. Must check the lotto tickets.....

Thanks for your thoughts. To be honest, this is my first year back in the saddle, so am more than happy with the performance (for now !!!). Must admit, that the carbon route sounds great. Are your's Ducati or aftermarket ?.

Being the mechanical dumba%$# that I am , had thought that slinging in K&N Filters would be a good idea. Had that done to an Acura I used to own and got noticably more low end pull. Would note that no tinkering was needed

Am popping into the Motorcycle show tomorrow on a fact finding mission and wanted some unbiased views on product before any commission hungry salemen get their hands on me !
