Radar detectors

Does anyone have any experience with a radar detector on a bike, what works, what doesn't work? What method of alerting the rider, light? sound? Know of any good sources? Apparantly there are a number of outlets selling remanufactured or outright fake detectors that don't work and have no warranty.

Of course, radar detectors are illegal in Ontario, and I personally would never think of using one, it's just info for a report I have to do for school.

Thanks for your post.I had no idea that radar detectors were illegal in Ontario.It's a good thing that you let us know.I'm sure that none of the members of the Club would want to do anything illegal.I'm going to go out to my garage right now and remove the radar detector that I put on my truck as a school project many years ago.I tell you I dont know what the worlds coming to ,the next thing that they will make illegal is speeding.
Thanks for letting us know.Seems like a great subject to discuss.
By the way a buddy of mine went online ,checked the features and ordered it online, it was shipped over the border to him no problem.It's a strange world.

Speeding illegal!? It never occurred to me! I'll admit that from time to time as I am riding along, my mind may stray to thoughts of doing good for others and I am not watching my speed. When I look down, to my horror, I may be a teense over the posted speed limit, many of which I have memorized for safer riding and the general good of all.

As part of my report for school, I too looked online at a site calle Radar Bob who is a retired cop and radar instructor. Some lucky shmoe had them use his bike as a test mule and they outfitted it from stem to stern with detectors, jammers, helmet mounted alerts, etc. He go to keep all the stuff.

To give my school report more impact, perhaps your buddy could tell us, or just email me, and tell me of his findings. I bet I get an A on this report.

I did this in 1980 with my first new bike, a GS750. I got it wired up and had my old man, he was a machinist, make up a rubber mount for between the handle bar and the mirror.
It worked for a week or so and then the vibration killed the unit.
God I miss my dad, that man made more stuff for me than I can remember and saved my sorry ass too many times by fixing things that would have been a BUY IT NEW situation.

Anyhow I would think the vibrations are the same and the R.D.'s are still built only for cars. Good luck

Seriously, the genesis of my silly 'handle' is as follows:

Vespa is Italian for wasp. My '01 ST4 is yellow and black. I think you can make the connection.

BTW- I wish to happily announce that after suffering a catastrophic engine grenading last summer, buying a replacement engine on Ebay and freshening it up with new rings, MBP collets, new exhaust valve guides, polished rockers, honed Nikasil bores, Barnett clutch with Yoyodyne basket, I pushed the 'magic' button at 11:45 EST and vrooom! the lovely sound of a healthy Ducati filled my workshop. I am very pleased.

Back to the thread. I ride with a buddy who shall remain nameless and who has a radar detector installed deep inside the internal fairings of his machine. He installed it for a report he was doing for school. Vibration has not been a factor. I have watched that little gizmo save our bacon a half a dozen times when, momentarily distracted by thoughts of doing good for others, our speed may have crept a little over the limit. When he slows down radically and gives me the hand signal, we make sure that we are obeying all posted speed limits and usually we come across an Ontario Police car a short distance up the road.

Surely there must be more Ducatisti that may have installed this valuable tool for making sure that you don't exceed the speed limit, which would be bad.

well don't forget the law -

Ontario Police are allowed to confiscate radar detectors - even if it means ripping them out of dashboards (i imagine that's fairings too)

Ontario Police have radar detector detectors.

probably better to hide it on your person.
