Cold start lever 1000ss

What does the "cold start lever" do on a ds1000ss. I know the bike is fuel injected, does it act as a choke or does it give the engine more fuel while starting ? I do not have a "cold start lever" on my bike as it is set up for racing and it did not come with one. I'm having trouble firing the bike up consistantley. I know the starter is under more stress and not turning the motor over very rapidly because of the higher compression. I tried opening the throttle a little when trying to start it, but I'm under the impression that this should be avoided. Also tried bump starting but the slipper clutch did what it should and did not engage / turn over the motor. Can the clutch be locked for starting ?

Thank's for any suggestions R Edge655...

Because it's fuel injected, I think it's just a fast idle control. I would think that opening the throttle slightly would achieve the same thing. Not sure why it was removed.
