Speedometer Stopped working

I have a 2000 Ducati 996. I was driving and the speedo needle starting jumping and then went full scale and stayed there.

I am assuming it is the speedo so I called up closest Ducati dealer to get a price on a new one. I gave them the bike info and they told me they would not help me. The reason is they said the bike hand been imported from the USA into Canada. They told me they will have nothing to do with bikes imported from the USA to Canada.

Anyway, can anyone tell me if I can buy a used speedo on the internet or from a salvage yard?

Second if I do find one can I remove & install the replacement myself?

I have looked and it looks easy but sometimes there can be problems when doing it yourself. I don't know if I trust a non-ducati dealer to do the work.

Any info would be appreciated.

Couple of things...

1.. Did you check the speedo cable is not broken at any point from the mechanism (at the wheel) to the actual speedometer ?

2.. Did you check the mechanism at the wheel to ensure that it is rotating fine.

Lastly...If you can't get your's working, I just checked...I have a spare speedo...in mph. Where are you located ? Send me 50 bucks + shipping I will send you this one ...it works fine.
You will need to remove your speedo out of the black casing and install this one....pretty simple.

Yes I did check the mechanism at the wheel no problems there. That was the first thing I checked.

No I have not checked the speedo cable yet. That was my next step. I was just asking around just in case it was the speedo. You know those things sometimes take a long time if you have to order and to know the cost for that kind of thing. I was just very shocked me really at the answer I got.

Actually I have been hands on for maintenance on the bike. I always let the shop do everything. Never had the space and in the condo they had rules about doing maintenance to vehicles in the garage.

Now that I have my own garage do you know where I can get a maintenance manual for this year and model?

Thanks for the offer of the speedo now that I know where I can get one if I need it I feel a lot better. I am hoping it is just the cable.

Is this true? They refused your business? Was it implied that this is some sort of retribution for purchasing a bike outside of Canada? I would like to know what Ducati North Americas policy is on this. Are you willing to name the dealer? I know business is business but I would still like to know who are the Ducati enthusiasts... and avoid those who are just in it for a buck.

About 10 years ago my Veglia speedo on my first SS belter went tits up after a spirited ride down hwy 518. I had it rebuilt and recalibrated for about 50$ by a guy who ran a shop up near York U in Toronto. I think this is the place;

You can also pick them up on eBay, I swapped out my MPH speedo for a NOS KPH speedo I got from a guy in Quebec for about $120.00.

The dealer who said they won't work on imported bikes sounds like the same weenies who said they wouldn't sell valve shims last year. FWIW when I requested a service quote for my 2000 748 from REV Cycle in Toronto earlier this year I indicated to them the bike was imported from the U.S. and they had no problems with servicing the bike or selling me parts.

The Haynes manual for the desmoquattro's is pretty good

Eric can correct me if I'm wrong, but I've heard the "no service for bikes imported from the US" only applies to bikes purchased new in the States by Canadian owners. It does not apply to used bikes imported to Canada, bikes bought new in the states by residents of the US who have relocated to Canada, or new bikes imported by Ducati Dealers to sell in Canada.

I have a hard time believing this. Is this Ducati policy? First, they charge 10% more than the US price for the same bike (over and above the exchange rate) and then they hold you hostage by refusing to sell parts and service for new bikes bought outside of Canada.

Ducatis' warranty is worldwide.There is no policy from Ducati N/A instructing dealers to refuse anything to the owner of a motorcycle purchased outside of Canada,new or used.The fact that the motorcycle was purchased in any other country has no bearing on warranty,service or parts sales.If you could inform me of the dealer that refused to deal with you regarding the price and availability of the part you need ,I will make sure that Ducati North America is informed of the dealers conduct.
