Octane

I suppose one could sum this up by saying there is one golden rule: NO PING
How you achieve that is unimportant as long as you don't toast the motor doing so. As far as the pumps go I have never heard of anyone saying don't use the highest rated gas because it will ruin your ride.

Something else to bear in mind is that the new bikes are fuel injected - presumably they're running some kind of knock sensor anyway and so should adjust (albeit by lowering performance) if you get a lower octane gas (comments from more knowledgeable owners welcome here - I don't own an FI bike).

Race gas is great - but it doesn't last long (very volatile) so be careful about using it outside of the track environment - I neglected to drain race gas from a track bike one year and had a hell of a time cleaning up the resulting mess in the carbs only a month later.

There are plenty of resources on the net to add to the argument about what to use - from what I've been able to understand the No Ping rule is best, though for the bikes I've erred on the side of buying 92-94 at the pump just to feel better about it.
