'92-98 900ss track bike set up

Postby Barnapkin » Tue Oct 10, 2006 7:55 pm

I posted this in classifieds by accident.

I'm slowly converting a '93 900ss for track day only use (not racing; yet???).

I'm interested in learning about any reasonable (I'm a poor duck owner) mods that any of you have done to your bike.

So far the bike has the following:
Rear fox shock
Racetech fork springs/valves
39mm FCRs
K&N pod filters
Upgraded Brembo brake master cylinder from 998s.

Also, I have three questions.
1. In an attempt to sharpen my steering, I have the fork tubes raised about 1in above the top triple clamp. What is a reasonable depth? I've heard that some folks have shimmed the rear ride height as well. How would I do this?? Is there a kit??

2. Since the bike is run only at high rpm, should I switch to a colder plug?

3. I've heard that some folks retard the timing 2-3 deg for track use. Is this done with a modified pickup?

I've got my forks slid up about an inch. About 1.25" is the most I've seen. I've got an Ohlins rear shock on my bike which has ride height adjustment. It's cranked up to the limit line. It is possible to make adapters to coarsely adjust ride height if your Fox shock doesn't have this adjustment.

It's cheap and relatively harmless to try different plug temps. I use the stock temp grade in my stock motor (has only the common K&N filter/no airbox top mod).

A good suspension guy too will tell you to only change one thing at a time, that way you can evaluate the effectiveness of your mod.

From my experience the biggest improvement in the performance of my '95 900 ss came from riding a 250 single for a couple of years.

Maybe I'm just lucky that my bikes's still way better than the rider because I don't have to spend any money to go faster ........... o&o

I started out slowly, but over the past 6 years I have made the following mods,
Superbike showa fork( from 2000 748) with Cycle cat triple clamp,
Showa rear shock ( from 2000 900ss, newer modles have more ride height)
Robymoto clipons
Braketech Rotors
MBP heads, 11:1 pistons
separate 41mm flatslides with short malosi intakes
slipper clutch, vented clutch cover
dyna coils
FBF slipons with modified header
FBF rear sets
Motowheels clutch slave cylinder.

This year I am purchasing a 2-1 header with twin reverse megaphones from ArcFabrication.

And the most significant mod I am making is a 3 day session with Freddie Spencer at Miller Motorsports park this summer
