'94 900SS not charging...

Postby PeterB » Tue Apr 06, 2010 10:41 am

Hi all,

I had my '94 900SS out for a ride last week and the low-battery indicator started to flicker. By the end of my ride the light was on full-time. I did a charging test and the thing is not charging at all. I checked all connections and all looks fine. I removed the voltage regulator and the readings I get are not up to snuff compared to the Haynes manual (really not that great in the electrical section.) I also read that there was an upgraded voltage regulator for this model and mine is the original type. It also says you need to replace the alternator and voltage regulator if you want to move up to the new style.

Is it adviseable to upgrade the alternator/regulator or just replace the regulator? If so, is this something a Ducati shop would have or do I need to wait 4 years to get the parts?

Thanks,

Peter

The single phase charging system was used until the end of the 98 model year on supersports.
From 1999 on a 3-phase system was used, with differences in the crankshaft  , flywheel, rotor, stator, left side engine cover, in other words, not financially intelligent.

Electrosport makes an upgraded single phase regulator that fits your bike that might solve your issues if the stator and wiring is ok.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

It's listed in the 2009 Motovan catalogue(Pg. 312), so it shouldn't be too difficult to locate from a local dealer.
Though I'm all for supporting local vendors, buying it direct from Electrosport or from US retailer might be drastically cheaper based on the current exchange rate. I've had good experience with California Cycleworks.
