Tail of the Dragon - June 5th - 13th

Along with a small, eclectic group of motorcyclists, I am taking a trip from the Guelph area ending up at the Tail of the Dragon. We will start early Saturday June 5th and return Sunday June 13th.

So far we have an experienced fast rider on a Kawasaki ZX1200, an experienced slow rider on a 750 Monster, a newbie on a Triumph Street Triple R (675cc), possibly an '83 750 Suzuki in the hands of a real newbie, and a Honda ST1100 in the hands of an experienced less aggressive rider.

Our plan is to head south through Buffalo towards Harrisburg Pennsylvania, detour through the Susquehannock State Forest, continue down to Front Royal where we enter onto the Skyline Drive, carry on onto the Blue Ridge Parkway until we spill out into the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. The target is the Tail of the Dragon just south west of the park. It is 1800 km one way and we plan 3 days to get down there.

If anyone is interested in joining us we would welcome questions and we plan to meet as a group to finalize plans. It is important to plan accommodations, so if you are interested, get in touch soon. Some of the group will be camping, the rest will be hotelling it.

The Dragon is closed at the moment. There was a rock slide that closed one end and the State has blocked off the road completely pending repairs.

There are lots of other good roads in the area, but if the point of the ride is the Dragon, check up on the progress before you head out.

edit: i'm mistaken....

from what i just read, 129 is closed from the tenn state line down to the lakes, so i wouldn't plan a trip down there expecting to ride it. apparently the tdot says it will not re-open until sept 1st.
